June 19th, often referred to as Juneteenth, is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. It marks the anniversary of Union Army General Gordon Granger announcing General Order No. 3 in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, declaring freedom for enslaved people in Texas. This was the last major Confederate territory to receive the news, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, resilience, and African American culture, often marked with parades, picnics, and educational events.
