Dylann Roof is a white supremacist who committed a mass shooting at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina, on June 17, 2015, killing nine African Americans. He was motivated by his racist beliefs and a desire to incite a race war. Roof was convicted of federal hate crimes and sentenced to death in 2017. He was also sentenced to life in prison without parole on state charges.
