A severe thunderstorm watch is issued when conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. This means that atmospheric instability, moisture, and lift are present, increasing the likelihood of storms producing large hail (1 inch in diameter or greater), damaging winds (58 mph or greater), and/or frequent lightning. While a watch doesn't mean severe weather is imminent, it's a signal to be prepared, stay informed by monitoring weather forecasts and alerts, and have a plan in place should a severe thunderstorm warning be issued.
