An Americano is a coffee drink made by diluting a shot of espresso with hot water, giving it a similar strength to, but different flavor from, traditionally brewed coffee. The ratio of espresso to water can vary, but typically ranges from 1:1 to 1:3, allowing for customization to personal preference. Originating during World War II, it is said to have been created by American soldiers in Italy who found the local espresso too strong and diluted it with hot water. The result is a larger, less intense cup of coffee with a crema, the characteristic foam from the espresso extraction, still present on top.
