Gastroenteritis, commonly known as the "stomach flu," is an inflammation of the stomach and intestines, usually caused by a viral or bacterial infection. Symptoms typically include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and sometimes fever. It is often spread through contaminated food or water, or through close contact with an infected person. While usually self-limiting and resolving within a few days with rest and hydration, severe cases, especially in infants, young children, and the elderly, may require medical attention to prevent dehydration.
