CAL FIRE, officially the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, is the state agency responsible for wildland fire protection on over 31 million acres of California's privately owned and state-owned wildlands. Beyond fighting wildfires, CAL FIRE also manages state forests, provides fire prevention education, enforces forest practice rules, and offers emergency medical services in some areas. The agency employs thousands of firefighters, operates a fleet of aircraft, and works closely with local, federal, and tribal partners to protect lives, property, and natural resources from the devastating effects of fire.
