The Foxx Amendment, formally known as Amendment 1 to the North Carolina Constitution, was a 2012 amendment that defined marriage solely as between one man and one woman. Approved by voters with 61% support, it effectively banned same-sex marriage and civil unions in the state. However, the amendment was later ruled unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2014, following the landmark Obergefell v. Hodges decision, which legalized same-sex marriage nationwide. While the amendment remains technically part of the North Carolina Constitution, its provisions are unenforceable due to the Supreme Court's ruling.
